Using a Fire Extinguisher — PASS Technique
Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep — the four steps that put a small fire out.
Knowing which extinguisher to use is half the skill — using it correctly is the other half. In this hands-on module, Nikita Industrial Securities Agency guards drill the internationally taught PASS technique until it becomes reflex.
The PASS Technique
- P — Pull the pin: break the tamper seal and remove the pin from the handle
- A — Aim low: point the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, never at the flames
- S — Squeeze the handle: apply slow, even pressure to release the agent
- S — Sweep side to side: sweep across the base of the fire until it is fully out, then watch for re-ignition
Safety Rules First
- Only fight a fire that is small, contained, and not spreading
- Always keep an exit at your back
- Stand upwind of the fire where possible
- If the fire grows or fills with smoke — evacuate and raise the alarm; never risk life for property
Drilled Until Automatic
Guards practise PASS on live training setups during the fire safety module, so that in a real incident there is no hesitation and no wasted seconds.
